Anonymous

If I were Lawful Evil, I would write a tome debunking the QAnon connections with the Star Wars mythology and, thus, cement the QAnon connections with the Star Wars mythology.

Voltron

“We’ve experienced parts of this before, just never all at once. As others noted, it’s like the Spanish flu of 1918 and the stock market crash of 1929 at the same time, but overseen by Harding’s total incompetence plus Nixon’s … Continue reading

Dilated II

A while ago, I mentioned Heinlein’s use of indirect exposition, but then I discovered that Eric S. Raymond (one of the fathers of the free software movement) had already written about this in “SF Words and Prototype Worlds” and “Rudyard … Continue reading

Legacy

As I wade through two decades of legacy code at work, I’m constantly reminded of two things: The Homer quote above and the madness-inducing Book from Neal Stephenson‘s Anathem.

Doctor

I stumbled on these strange but lovely Chinese Dr. Who posters. Apparently, the Chinese title is 神秘博士 (Shénmì Bóshì) which translates to something like “Mysterious Doctor”!

Valley

Alita: Battle Angel is a two hour tour through the uncanny valley. Quite a letdown for a movie I’ve been waiting for since circa 2006.  However, I did enjoy the cameo stunt casting of the Big Boss, a famous actor with … Continue reading

Gigerpunk

I was quibbling with coworkers over lunch as to the definition of cyberpunk.  I said that it was marked by dystopia, a film noir aesthetic, and technology filtering down to a criminal underworld.  But a couple of guys insisted that … Continue reading

Bounty

There’s an Indian restaurant in Stamford that I’ve been frequenting, but I can’t read the name without thinking of  the Han Solo line “Well, the bounty hunter we ran into on Ord Mantell changed my mind.”

Dilated

My brilliant friend Holly had mentioned that Ninefox Gambit, the first book in Yoon Ha Lee‘s Machineries of Empire trilogy, had “cracked [her] head open in a good way” which made me want to read it immediately. By the end of the … Continue reading

Paperclips

Played this inspired (if somewhat harrowing) in-browser game called Universal Paperclips.  Definitely worth the time to play to the absolute end.

Fallout

As a Cold War kid, I was always taught that Australia would probably be the only place in the world safe from fallout!

Hilltop

Watching the sun set over Coober Pedy, I found myself thinking of the double sunset on Tattooine. The sound of distant chicken and sheep and dogs made me think of Gyantse in Tibet.  And how in Chapter 80 of the Dao … Continue reading

Underhill

Coober Pedy is a legendary opal mining town.  (Apparently the name is an English corruption of the local Aboriginal term “kupa-piti” meaning “boys’ waterhole”.)  Not quite Hobbiton, but the residents famously live in dugouts underground. I stayed the night in the Lookout … Continue reading
