Personal

These have been some of my rawest, most honest, most vulnerable posts.

Cliche

The woman sitting next to me in BART from the Mission back to Berkeley is reading The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Crystals.  Not a joke.

Bourgeois V

Yet another little surprise.  I’ve always heard about the Hong Kong airport’s lounge — complete with a stylish noodle bar — which leaves other airports’ lounges paling in comparison, but I’ve never had long enough between flights to enjoy it myself.  I finally did.

Route

I have taken cabs from Puxi to the airport in Pudong dozens & dozens of times.  But this time — as I go to the airport to move back to America — the cabbie surprised me by taking a northern route I had never, ever taken before!

It’s the little surprises in life that delight me.

Symmetry II

For my last dinner in Shanghai, I went to the Boxing Cat Brewery in Xintiandi.  This is where Eli & I went for dinner the day I moved here.

Walk

When people ask me what I’m going to do after returning home from China and leaving DreamWorks, I tell them I plan to “walk the Earth.”

Seal

At my farewell party at ODW, my Chinese teacher Li Jie and everyone gave me this Chinese seal with my Chinese name:  大卫杨 (Dàwèi Yáng)

One of the greatest gifts I have ever received.

Guānxì

One of the most important things — perhaps the most important thing — in Chinese culture is the idea of 关系 (guānxì)

Scouring

They painted a caricature of Trump on the wall at Lobster + Chicken.  I can’t believe the America I’m going back to.

Reminds me of the Hobbits coming home from their epic journey only to find Saruman befouling the Shire.

Evolution

A lot has changed since I first came to Shanghai in 2013.  We moved into the 15th & 16th floors of Greenland Center and then expanded onto the 12th floor.  The 12th floor is now deserted.
This wall of QR codes at the Urban Planning Museum reminded me of my friend Ben’s vision for what was then known as Launchpad.
Finally got up the courage to try the choose-your-ingredients chili bowl place in basement of Greenland.  Doubling the number of Coke Lights available in the 12th floor vending machine was our consultant Mr. Henderson’s biggest success.
The “Greenland Being Funny” mall kitty corner to the office building finally opened after all these years.  Lu Qiong & I shared a lunch on our last day at a place there called Lobster + Chicken.  They were out of chicken.  I had steak. The Langham in Xintiandi replaced their front doors with a revolving door.  The doormen don’t know what to do with themselves.

Mogwai

A Chinese friend of mine likes the Scottish band Mogwai.  The band named themselves after the creatures in the American film Gremlins.  The creatures in the movie, in turn, were based on 魔鬼 (móguǐ) meaning “monster” or “evil spirit” or “demon”) from Chinese mythology.

The circle of life.

Yenta FLASHBACK

Saturday and Sunday afternoons, the walkways of Shanghai’s People’s Park are crowded with parents & grandparents trying to marry off their single children & grandchildren, each represented by a little resume with birthday, age, income, etc.

As I come home to America, I’ve been thinking about these songs a lot.  (And, yes, two John Denver songs in a row.  Because reasons.)

  • “Eve of Destruction” Barry McGuire
  • “Let It Be” The Beatles
  • “Sweetness Follows” R.E.M.

  • “Leaving on an Airplane” John Denver
  • “California” Phantom Planet
  • “Up the Beach” Jane’s Addiction

Autonyms

The Chinese usually choose their own Western name (unless family give them one when they’re little or foreign friends christen them with a nickname or something.)

Some just pick something normal:  Andrew, Carol, Frank, Stephanie, Alex.  Others prefer something that they feel sounds classier or more exotic:  Dancy, Suky, Heath, Coco, Harper, Sienna, Sandirena.

Some will use the literal translation of their Chinese name.  (jīng) means “crystal” so Jing goes by the name Crystal.  黄虎 (huánghǔ) means “yellow tiger” so Huanghu goes by the name Tiger.  (His last name is Wang, too, which makes it extra awesome.)

Some choose a name that sounds a little like their Chinese name.  I know a Lin that goes by Jocelyn.  A Lu that goes by Lulu.  A Xiao that goes by Shawn.  A Rui that goes by Rachel.

Some opt for what, to American ears, sounds like a random word.  I have worked with a Fresh, a Reborn, a Feeling, and a women who went by the name Missing (which caused more than a few “Who’s On First” moments, I can assure you.)  Actually, all of those names sound like decent rapper names, now that I think about it, so maybe they’re on to something.

Some invent their own name.  A Linux system administrator at work named Xin goes by Sinux.  A woman in production is called Blander, which I’ve heard tell was an attempt at the name Amanda.
